My next destination is Touba, Bagadadji, northwest of Madina. There are several Toubas in Guinea and Senegal. It gets confusing. That’s why the Touba I am headed to today is clarified by including the sous-prefecture: Bagadadji.

The most well known Touba is in Diourbel, Senegal. This Touba is the cultural/religious center of the Mouride brotherhood, an order of Sufi Islam. It is a city of ~half a million. The grand mosque is awe inspiring. Every year tens of thousands of Mourides make a pilgrimage to Touba.

The second most significant is probably Touba, Gaoual, in Guinea. This is the holy city for the Jaxanké people and is by far the oldest Touba. It is a town of 12-15 thousand. There will be more on Touba, Gaoual.

Today I am heading to Touba, Bagadadji, a village of no more than ~1000 people. I don’t know much about it— just that it’s Jaxanké.
